I’m from an Island among the group of Islands in Micronesia, a sub region of Oceania in the Pacific Ocean.
From a small Island we are rarely exposed to diversity, not the big World but other neighboring Islands. Unlike back in the days we are decedents of seafarers. Nowadays, no other Islander would just dream to relocate to another Island to make a living. It would be rare due to some life circumstances. Each Islands have their own local native language and culture. We have thousand of different Island languages and cultures. However moving here in the Midwest I have met numerous Islanders from different regions of the Pacific Ocean. I am Blessed to have made friends and learned more about their unique culture. There’s not a lot of Islanders here where I live, so stumbling among each other I get that urge to pause and give them the welcoming or hello interaction. If your an Islander you know it when you see it!
Adding to my current chapter of life is living in Kansas City Missouri. I’m fortunate we moved here in the Midwest. Some people I’ve come across would ask what is an Islander doing out here in the Midwest?! I would jokingly say “I wonder sometimes too”. It had some rough adjustments especially for the weather and missing my families. In spite of that, in a couple of years I grew fonder of Kansas City Missouri. It’s a place you need to build a relationship into. Once the relationship blossomed I fell in Love. Not to mention the amazing friends I’ve made. The community, almost everywhere I’d go the repeated script “hi, how are you?!”, “how’s your day going?” simultaneously. Ofcourse there’s some bad everywhere but the good outweighs the wonderful people I’ve met.
Furthermore Kansas City keeps getting more attractive while living here, by acquiring a World Series and two Super Bowl Championship! It’s something to be proud of. After ten years and three children we bought our beautiful home. Now we call Kansas City Missouri our second home!
